We’re all missing someone at the moment. Social media is great for keeping in touch but there’s something satisfying about sending a handwritten note; and who doesn’t love receiving a letter in the post (as long as it’s not a credit card statement or junk mail of course!). It’s also a great to start a new indoor hobby while winter drags on!
If anyone is in need of any additional motivation to get writing, here are some prolific letter writers who weren’t afraid to put pen to paper:
Elizabeth I wrote many letters which give a unique insight into the monarch’s thoughts her strategies. Similarly, Queen Victoria was particularly fond of writing to her eldest daughter Victoria, Princess Royal, to whom she sent letters often (apparently about twice a week) for over 40 years.
Away from Royalty, Norfolk’s own Horatio Nelson has become known for his letters carefully detailing his successes in battle. Napoleonwas also a keen writer; fifteen volumes of his letters have been published containing over 40,000 letters!
The destruction wrought by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was recorded by Pliny the Younger in his letters to Tacitus. Less dramatic but still interesting, Jane Austen recorded particulars of her daily life in her letters.
Our own letters might not be so well-crafted, historically significant or grammatically correct; but they can mean the absolute world to family and friends.
